Being an artist for most of my lifetime, I have enjoyed the journey to find my style and mediums of choice. Dabbling in the fine arts from painting, sculpture, and collage, I found myself producing more work within the graphic arts/web design field. I missed the hands on experience of creating tangible objects. I dreamt of being a well known children’s book or scientific illustrator. Most works felt forced and I struggled to stand out from other artists in my field. Then I met my husband and started to do large window displays at his stores trying to always create a dynamic and interesting experience to those who passed. The process was exciting and working with recycled materials seemed to give life to everything I was producing. I had worked with cardboard as a supporting design element many times and increasingly fell in love with how versatile it was. I started to make cardboard pieces for stage productions. The cardboard was super light and the pieces could be large and elaborate. I incorporated movement and light into my pieces but they were still quite commercial in their purpose. I wanted to use cardboard and make pieces that would be considered fine art.

This piece is the result of years of preparation and construction. I am fascinated by the lines and composition of these motorcycles. I took tedious steps to ensure that the motorcycle was accurate in size and appearance. During the process I found that the areas that I took artistic license on to be the most satisfying.

My hope is that this piece brings joy to anyone who sees it and hopefully a double take when they realize it is not a real motorcycle, but rather one made of cardboard. Each piece contains at least one other embellishment that is not cardboard, and in this case I added thumbtacks for the lights. This is my distinguishing mark. I continue to find my path and it is lined with cardboard.
